Our First Day of School!
Our first day of First Grade was fabulous! I can tell that we are going to have a fantastic school year!!
We began the day learning about each other! I read a story called "A Kaleidoscope of Kids" that the children really enjoyed. We talked about how each person is different in their own special way...but, we can still get along and be friends! The children then shared their "All About Me!" bags. The children got to share the 3 items that the brought to school that described them. There were some very unique and creative items in those bags! I actually learned a lot about your child!!
We then learned about classroom procedures and rules... this is always very important. I was very impressed by what they remember from Kindergarten. I also talked about how classroom rules might be different in other teacher's classrooms (my rules may not be exactly the same, as the rules in kindergarten). Of course, the children knew all about how to treat each other, listen, and follow directions... that's a good thing!!
We also got to take a tour of South Douglas Elementary School! We visited the cafeteria, media center, office, gym, music room, art room, and MOST importantly, the BIG KID playground! Yay!!!!!!
It was snack time after that (yummy!), then on to Special Areas (PE, Art, & Music) for the next 50 minutes. I used this time to plan some activities and prepare for our next item of business... the "First Day Friends" survey! The children loved this!! They got to go around the room and find out who has a cat, who has a birthday in June, who has brown eyes, etc., etc.... Dax and Callie even got a special prize for being the first boy and girl finished!
We broke for lunch, then came back for "Back to School" Bingo. This was a fun activity to end our day of First Grade! It was then.... time to pack up and head home!!
I hope your child enjoyed his/her first day of school... I know I did!!!

Welcome to First Grade Letter

Welcome To First Grade!!!
Dear Parents,
I hope you and your family had an enjoyable summer! I am very excited about this school year! I will do all I can to make it a successful and happy year for your child. Listed below is some information to start the year off right.
Please send lunch/breakfast money in (for the week) on Monday in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and teacher’s name.
We will be using the computer a LOT in First Grade! Please help your child practice typing their login at home (Their first name, middle initial, and last name — For example: john c smith. This will help them log on to the computer much faster!
Homework reinforces skills taught at school. It will be a review of information that I have presented in class. Your child should spend approximately 30 minutes each night on homework assignments and reading. If homework time is lasting much longer and you and your child are frustrated, please contact me. Homework should not be a nightly nightmare!
Your child will receive a homework folder every afternoon. On Mondays, you will receive the assignments for the week and a daily behavior report. It is important for you to initial this every night. Return the folder every morning. You may include notes for me in this folder; however, sometimes I don’t always check the folders first thing. Have your child hand me a note if it is urgent. I will only take out the homework that is due for that day. If you do homework early, it will not be picked up until the day it is due. On most Fridays your child will bring home his/her papers for the week.
It will benefit your child if you spend time discussing the questions your child missed on weekly assignments and tests. Don’t worry if you see some mistakes until your child understands the material. I do not have a “sink or swim” philosophy.
If you would like to join us for lunch, please call the school to place your order and we will pick you up in the lobby on the way. Please do not come on down to class, because this is one of the most hectic times of the day. Our lunch time is at 12:30.
We will have recess each day unless it is extremely cold. It is very important that your child have a jacket each day. If you would like to leave one in his/her cubby, that will be fine. Also, you may want to send a change of clothes (especially if you work far away). Sometimes the kids have lunchroom/mud puddle accidents!
Thank you for allowing me to teach your child! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. You may use my email address as I check my email daily. It is Wendy.Gilstrap@douglas.k12.ga.us.
